Case Study 1

Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and referring pain along the course of the sciatic nerve. This referred pain, called "sciatica", often goes down the back of the thigh and/or into the lower back. Patients generally complain of pain deep in the buttocks, which is made worse by sitting, climbing stairs, or performing squats.

Patient Profile:
Name: Liz R
Sex: Female
Age: 50
Profession: Retired DR
Lifestyle: Three keep-fit sessions a week, long days spent writing novels.

Symptoms: Dull deep ache from buttock region, with increased pain on climbing hills, stairs and driving.
Previous treatment history: Extensive physiotherapy sessions, involving ultrasound and mobility work. This treatment proved ineffectual with the problem continuing despite treatment.

Core-PT Treatment: Having established the cause of the pain through objective/subjective evaluation and range of movement testing. The problem was diagnosed as Piriformis Syndrome. Upon further examination of the muscle tissue it was evident there were multiple trigger points (areas of exquisite pain) in the belly of the piriformis muscle. These were subsequently treated over three 30-minute sessions with the pain becoming less apparent after each session, swiftly leading to the client being pain free.

Client feedback: “By the time Hugo diagnosed my Piriformis syndrome, I spent a fortune with the physiotherapist and was still having to pull myself upstairs using the banister. Hugo diagnosed the problem immediately and I was pain free after three sessions of treatment.”
